After a gap of many years, Doctor Who returned to its former home the ABC for a three-year run of repeats starting in 2003. That it was also the show's 40th anniversary was likely a factor.
In the early 1990s, all the production and management departments had begun to relocate from the ABC's 40+ year old studio complex at Gore Hill in North Sydney to the larger brand new purpose-built facility at Ultimo in central downtown Sydney; the new centre of operations (officially opened in November 2002) was specifically created for digital broadcasting.
By the early 2000s, all the ABC's departments bar a few were gone from Gore Hill. (The remaining contents of old the Video Library (formerly the Film Library and Bond Store) had been shifted to Ultimo in 1991.) After 47 years of operation, the Gore Hill studio buildings were eventually demolished in 2002.
The ABC secured the rights to all original Classic Doctor Who serials - with the exception of nine below. Due to ongoing and ever-changing rights issues with the estate of Terry Nation, the following eight serials scripted by him or which featured the Daleks could not be acquired:
- The War Games (albeit being a fleeting cameo only, the appearance of a Dalek at the Doctor's trial was enough to exclude this entire story from the package)
- Day of the Daleks
- Frontier in Space
- Planet of the Daleks
- Destiny of the Daleks
- Resurrection of the Daleks
- Revelation of the Daleks
- Remembrance of the Daleks
Also not shown was the 1996 TV Movie.
And since ABC was now a digital broadcaster, they were supplied with fresh digital transfers of every episode to replace all the old analogue tapes they had been using since the 70s and 80s, many of which had been edited by censors. As a result of this, the run now included uncut stories, however some of the episodes supplied by the BBC had oddities:
- S part 1 was the edited print that was returned from Nigeria even though an uncut copy also existed
- BB was the recently restored BBC VHS version
- BBB and CCC were in black and white
- DDD part 5 was the early edit with the previously omitted 'radio' scene
- EEE was also b/w; part 4 was the censor-cut Australian print returned in the 70s!
- JJJ was the recolourised VHS version
- PPP part 2 was no longer the extended edit
- WWW part 1 was in black and white, part 3 was the longer early edit
- XXX part 1 aired uncut for the first time
- 4K part 1 was missing music in one scene
- 4P part 3 was missing its freeze-frame ending
- 5C part two was an earlier edit, with an extended scene (as on the VHS release)
- Davison serials 5X, 6A and 6R aired unedited in Australia for the first time
- 6K aired in its four-part edition, albeit with the Dalek scenes removed, due to the same rights issues as noted above
- 7B episode 2 was an early edit without music or sound effects, while part 3 was incorrectly credited to "Pip and Jane Baker" instead of "Philip Martin"
- 7N retained the previously-missing Russian / English subtitles
- The ABC screened all available serials, from A to 7P (this did not include the TV Movie), Monday to Thursday, at 6.00pm.
- Each episode was preceded by a psychedelic title caption card saying "BACK TO THE FUTURE".
- The first episode of the run - An Unearthly Child - aired at 6.00pm on 15 September 2003. This was followed at 6.30pm by the season premiere of George Negus Tonight (this long-running series had previously been called Dimensions), which featured a capsule history of the series, including clips and interviews with Australian fans.
|
- Although the episodes were aired 'simultaneously' over the network, there were still occasional regional variances in the form of continuity announcements that played in over the closing credits. These were added locally, so viewers in (say) SYDNEY would hear a different voice-over than viewers in BRISBANE.
- Meanwhile, over on BBC UKTV (see previous page, Part Nine), a separate weekly run of 40th anniversary stories commenced on Saturday, 3 October 2003 – one complete story shown as an omnibus for each Doctor – plus a "40th Anniversary Surprise" on 23 November, although what exactly this "Surprise" consisted of is currently unknown!
- The black and white first instalment of WWW had its first 'free to air' screening. (It had previously only been available on the pay-to-view subscriber station BBC UKTV.)
- On Saturday, 21 May 2005, mid-way through the weekday repeat of 5F, the first episode of the New Series, Rose, was screened. The first Christopher Eccleston series concluded 13 weeks later, on 13 August 2005, during the repeat of 5Z.
- The last two Davison stories 6Q and 6R plus the non-Dalek Colin Bakers and McCoys shown from 2005 to 2006 aired with two standard 25 minute episodes back-to-back each night. The pairings were not edited together as had been done with some previous screenings; instead there was a short break between the two for news or ABC promos. The 'second' episode started with its credits intact without the usual ABC and BACK TO THE FUTURE idents and intros.
- There was a one week break for sports between Parts 8 and 9 of The Trial of a Time Lord.
- The final episode of this ABC repeat run – 7P part 3 – played on Friday, 3 February 2006.

Block 29: SCI-FI CHANNEL / Syfy / SF ---- August 2011 onwards
Repeats | 4A---- and onwards… |
- Starting on Wednesday, 17 August 2011, Doctor Who returned to Australian airwaves on the SCI-FI Channel (aka Syfy / SF) (Foxtel Channel 125, then two hours later on Channel 165). The repeat run commenced with the Tom Baker episodes, two uncut episodes back to back each night (with a short commercial break between each), airing weekdays from 5.30pm. (The same pair of episodes also screened several times each day.)
- To celebrate the occasion, the station held a "DOCTOR WHO TWEETUP" in four eastern cities.
- The Baker run had concluded by mid December 2011 (on 14 December?).
- After a break of a few months, the station began screening the Peter Davison stories from 19 March 2012, again two episodes back to back (uncut), and again repeated at various times throughout the day – for instance, in SYDNEY, the times were 12.30-1.25pm, 5.30-6.25pm, then 10.20-11.10pm.
- All the Davison episodes - with the exception of the skipped 6K - had concluded in early May 2012.
- After a short break, starting from 9 July 2012, all stories for Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy aired, concluding 5 September 2012.
- For the season 22 stories, it appears that SCI-FI was supplied with the original 1985 45 minute versions, rather than the re-edited 25 minute episodes usually supplied to overseas stations. Although SCI-FI was airing two episodes back to back anyway, they still had to stop for a short 'break' at the half way mark; the action therefore just 'stopped' at that mid-way point rather than concluding at a more suitable 'dramatic' moment or cliffhanger. When the programme resumed after the break, it just started where it had left off without any titles or intros.
- The Colin Baker stories all aired otherwise uncut.
- From 6 September 2012, the Jon Pertwee stories played, again two episodes per day. BBB was the colour-restored version.
- CCC was the usual mix of colour and b/w episodes, while JJJ was the colour-restored version.
- KKK was the only Dalek story that was skipped, presumably due to the usual rights issues.
- SSS episode three was the restored colour version, making this the first time the complete story had aired in colour on television anywhere since its debut in 1973!
- WWW part one was in b/w.
- The final screening of 2012 was the last two episodes of ZZZ on Friday, 30 November 2012.
- The renamed syfy channel continued to play Doctor Who throughout 2013, 2014 and into 2015...

STAN ---- Late 2021 onwards
After a long period of there being no Classic Doctor Who on TV in Australia, a small selection of Dalek serials and animated reconstructions became available to view on the Streaming platform Stan starting in late 2021. (Stan was already showing the New Series and Torchwood.) The available stories were from the same "streaming" package that had previously been shown on the Horror Channel and Twitch:

- The Dalek Invasion of Earth
- The Power of the Daleks (2019 colour animated version)
- The Macra Terror (2019 colour animated version – possibly also b/w?)
